Tanya Borowski, mBANT mIFM, DipCNM Functional Nutritional Therapist

Tanya Borowski BANT In SPA I initially became interested in food after leaving school, and undertook a three year Diploma in Hotel Management & Catering. The years that followed took me all over Europe cooking for chalet- holiday skiing groups. Fifteen years later, following a successful career in the travel industry I decided to combine my love for food with a growing interest in its healing properties, and retrain as a nutritional therapist. Commencing my training in Sydney, I then returned to the UK and completed a three-year Diploma in Nutritional Therapy with the College of Naturopathic Medicine, London. This left me hungry (if you’ll excuse the pun) for delving far deeper into the biochemistry and so took my studies further to train with the innovative Institute of Functional Medicine.

The Functional Medicine (FM) model is one that truly resonates with me and as such forms the bedrock of my practice. The principles of FM is anchored by an unraveling of the core imbalances that underlie, or cause ill health, and not simply offering solutions to the symptoms of a condition.

Additional postgraduate training
My quest for knowledge has allowed me to partake in specialist training with some of the most respected functional medical doctors and specialist in their field ranging from leading coeliac and gluten sensitivity specialists such as Dr Tom O Bryan, autoimmunity and thyroid specialist Dr Datis Kharrazian, Dr Mark Hyman and of course the “Godfather” of Functional Medicine Dr Jeffery Bland. I travel to the States at least twice a year to attend postgraduate training to further my knowledge and best help my clients.

Over the time that I have been practicing I have developed a specialist interest and am most often consulted in: autoimmunity, digestive complaints such as IBS, SIBO, non-coeliac gluten sensitivity, coeliac, and IBD, how to best assess for and manage thyroid health together with conditions of poor energy delivery such as CFS & fibromyalgia where more mainstream medicine appears to fall short.

I do also create bespoke weight loss packages using the functional medicine paradigm to again unravel the causes of individual’s reasons for incremental weight gain, plateauing or inability to lose weight.

There are many conditions recognised as requiring unique recommendations and, as such I have taken undergraduate and postgraduate training to provide me with increased expertise in functional digestive conditions, hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's. I completed my IFM certification in April 2016, and as such became one of only 10 fully certified practitioners in the UK, and keep updated on the research by attending numerous medical seminars and conferences, specifically in mitochondrial, autoimmunity and gastrointestinal health.

Medical Seminars and Conferences:

  • Dr Natasha Cambell Mc Bride’s practitioner GAPS© graduate training

I attended and completed the inaugural AFMCP™-UK training in London in 2011.

Functional medicine emphasises a definable and teachable process of integrating multiple knowledge bases within a pragmatic intellectual matrix that focuses on functionality at many levels, rather than a single treatment for a single diagnosis. Functional medicine uses the patient's story as a key tool for integrating diagnosis, signs and symptoms, and evidence of clinical imbalances into a comprehensive approach to improve both the patients environmental inputs and his or her physiological function.

In addition to my one-to-one work in clinical practice, I work as an on-site nutritionist with The Healthy Holiday Company at their in:spa retreats, with Dr Nyjon Eccles at The Natural Doctor Harley Street and collaboratively with the team at FORM in Notting Hill.

Yours in health,

Tanya
